淡水真珠は日本のアコヤ真珠と違い、
母貝が池蝶貝(イケチョウカイ)から生まれます。
海水ではなく、淡水で養殖され、
日本でも僅かですが
琵琶湖などで生産されています。
しかし殆どが中国で生産され、
市場の殆どが中国産になります。
品質は現在は随分向上し、
テリの素晴らしいものや、
日本のアコヤ真珠と見間違える程、
丸くて美しい真珠が出来る事もあります。
真珠に興味があり、真珠選びに悩む場合、
まず最初に淡水真珠から買ってみる
と云うのも良いと思います。
それほど淡水真珠には良い面があり、
お薦め出来る点があります。
ひとつはアコヤ真珠に比べ安価な事。
日本のアコヤ真珠と違い、
核を持たない為、真珠層が厚く汗に強い。
形や色が多彩で特徴があり、
デザイン製品に向き、

この色については本当に多彩です。
ホワイト・ピンク・オレンジ・パープル等
淡い天然色で美しいです。
ただ、その淡い色を
濃く染色している場合もあり、
ホワイトは黄色みがかった物が多いので、
漂白でかなり白くされた物もあります。
