その名の通り湖や川などの
淡水で育つ貝から生まれます。
対して、一般的なパール(真珠)は、
海の水で育つ貝から、
つまり海水パールとも言えます。
どちらも人工真珠ではないという点で、
「本真珠」とも言われます。
現在流通している淡水パールは、
殆どが養殖によって生産されています。
アコヤ真珠等と養殖方法が異なり、
球状の核を挿入しない為、
ライス型やバロック型等の形状も
多く流通しています。
以前は、淡水パールと言えば、
安価で粗悪なイメージが強かったようですが、
現在は養殖技術の向上もあり、
立派で美しい淡水パールが生産されています。
カラー、形状のバリエーションが
豊富な事から、アクセサリーの素材として
多く取り入れられています。
